Self Assembling Robots

Project Mission | Project Status

The goal of this project was to examine, evaluate, and develop the concepts, mechanisms, and processes required for the creation of self-assembling robots using the notion of self-organization from complexity theory. Cybernet developed detailed plans for a self-assembling robot based on independently operating geometric shaped 'Parts', centered on an intelligent Host core. The Parts are capable of independent movement and limited intelligence, to allow them to reposition themselves around the Host, or to perform solo tasks while not attached to either the Host or other Parts. An artificial intelligence was designed to allow Parts to operate in unison with the Host and other Parts as a whole, to operate with other Parts and no Host, or to operate solo, to allow 'lost' Parts to continue operating long enough to find a new Host, or other Parts.

Completed for NASA.
